Pupil Evaluation of Teachers

Pupil feedback as formative evaluation of teaching has been widely used at the tertiary level, but relatively little in the school situation, and scarcely at all with student teachers. The present investigation is concerned with (a) constructing a pupil evaluation of teachers (PET) scale, for use throughout years 7 to 11, incorporating certain areas of teaching behaviour, and affective pupil responses to teachers; and (b) using the scale as a source of feedback to both regular and student teachers for improving teaching behaviour.After a series of studies, PET was reduced to four areas of teaching behaviour (Management, Negative Focusing, Faulty Verbalization and Teaching Clarity) and one scale of Pupil Reaction to the teacher. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were high in all scales for regular and student teachers, while between-class agreement was high for regular teachers but somewhat lower for student teachers.
