Residential Consumers’ Behaviour Towards Efficient Energy Utilisations in Kajang, Selangor:

2019
Electricity consumption is growing rapidly worldwide. The fuel resources has become scarce and the price has become more expensive due to the increasing demand for energy. Therefore, improving energy efficiency could be achieved not only by managing the supply, but also by managing the demand of electricity. The utilities may embark on managing the supply side to ensure reliable supply at reduced generating cost, while the energy users will normally control their energy usage by undertaking demand-side management. We still have to depend on people adjusting their energy consumption, supported by an evidence that technical interventions, if carried out in isolation, have lower impact and are more expensive to implement. Engaging with the consumers to reshape their energy behaviour is one of the methods. Understanding the relationship between the types of consumers’ energy behaviours and the predictive variable is crucial. This would provide an insight into a richer understanding of how and for whom different behaviour-based interventions work best. Hence, this study aims to first identify their behavioural preference, and followed by identifying the factors that contribute to each behaviour in terms of contextual factor and psychographic variable, which is attitude. This study concludes by noting that a majority of the residential consumers in Kajang were likely to adopt curtailment behaviour and the strongest predictor to this behaviour was bill consciousness. Income and bill consciousness were found to strongly predict efficiency behaviour.
