UVA-mediated Heme Oxygenase1 Expression Contributes to UVA-induced Protection

2010
Long wave ultraviolet radiation(UVA,wave length range in 320~400 nm) generates reactive oxygen species that can lead to skin damage or immune-suppressive effects on some parts of immune system. It may also enhance the damage incurred due to the medium wave ultraviolet radiation(UVB,wave length range in 280~320 nm).Conversely, some studies indicate that UVA radiation will not induce the immunosuppression and can inhibit the UVB-induced immunosuppression via mediating the expression of heme oxygenase 1(HO-1) to protect skin cells. In this study,a review on the immune-protective responses caused by UVA exposure reported in the literature is provided. Also, effects of HO-1 expression on the inhibition of UVB-induced immunosupression is summarized, especially the antioxidant and immune-protective capability of HO-1.This work can facilitate further understanding on the response mechanism of UVA exposure and provide valuable guidance on the application of sunscreen.
