Creep and fatigue of engineering materials

Summary The creep behaviour of materials used in nuclear reactors, gas turbines and in electrical power plant is discussed in terms of the underlying physical processes. Our understanding of fatigue is less good, but it is possible to give qualitative reasons for particular fatigue characteristics of various engineering materials. Finally, the development of new materials is mentioned.
