Travel behavior and psychology

2020
Abstract This chapter describes how my collaborators and I between 1982 and 2018 applied theories and empirical results in psychology to modeling of interrelated activity/travel choices, developing and evaluating methods for car-use reduction, and measuring satisfaction with travel. A computational process model was developed of activity/travel scheduling building on realistic psychological assumptions. The approach to car-use reduction was based on a related conceptualization of the process through which households adapt to internal or external changes. In studies of satisfaction with travel, a self-report scale was developed and used to measure emotional responses during travel and retrospective evaluations of satisfaction with travel.
