Photon-magnon coupling: Historical perspective, status, and future directions

2019
Abstract Interaction of photons with magnons has increasingly been studied in recent years. Strong photon-magnon (P-M) coupling allows two different systems to efficiently exchange their energy and information, and thus can be used to develop quantum transducers and long-lifetime multimode quantum memories. This review presents a brief overview of the recent progress achieved so far in the field of P-M coupling in a rich variety of hybrid systems by theoretical and experimental studies. We first provide an overview of the origin of the concept along with a systematic description of various associated features and phenomena. Next, we describe key experimental results for a variety of hybrid systems and several coupling mechanisms. This review, which ends by highlighting prospective and future applications of P-M coupling, will be of interest to both general readers and specialists who have conducted or will do research on various aspects of magnetization dynamics and a variety of coupled hybrid systems.
