The zirconia-based interfacial coatings on SiC fibers obtained by different chemical methods

2019
Abstract The features of the yttria-stabilized zirconia coatings on Nicalon CG fibers obtained by two different chemical methods, namely, the sol-gel and MOCVD method were examined in terms of the morphology, elemental composition, and mechanical behavior. Both MOCVD-derived and sol-gel-derived coatings are rather uniform along length and diameter filament. However, the drawback of the sol-gel-derived coating is the presence of a small quantity of the elongated defects that originate from the sol retained between tightly packed filaments in tow during coating procedure. The reasons of degradation of the mechanical properties of the coated fibers are discussed.
