Social Awareness Among Higher Education Teachers

Social awareness refers to the factual knowledge about important aspects of social system and its allied problems. It also refers to the capacity on the part of the individual to make proper diagnosis and thereby develop an attitude of mind. The aim of the study was to ascertain the level of social awareness among higher education teachers and its impact on teaching learning process. The data for the present study consisted of 420 Higher Education teachers which were collected from total population of University of Kashmir and different Govt. Recognized Degree Colleges of the Kashmir Valley. Random sampling technique was used with equal chance for every University and College teacher to get selected in the sample. To measure the social awareness among higher education teachers Nadeem-Ijlal’s Social Awareness Scale (NISAS) (1999) on various dimensions viz. Economy, education, family, polity, religion, bonded labour, casteism, child labour, child marriage, corruption, communication, dowry, drug addiction, population explosion, youth and women. The study revealed that there is no significant difference on overall sample of higher education teachers between university and college teachers on social systems and social evils dimensions of social awareness. The study also shows that both university and college teachers possess almost same level of social awareness with respect to social systems viz, economy, education, family, polity and religion and social evils viz, bonded labour, casteism, drug addiction, women’s problem, corruption etc. the study further revealed that on overall sample of higher education teachers, there is no significant difference between university and college teachers on knowledge, diagnosis and attitude dimensions of social awareness.
