ROUTE 114 TRAFFIC CALMING DEMONSTRATION PROJECT

2000
The scenario of today's transportation and demographic trends compromising the qualities that make a place so desirable to love in and visit has become an all too familiar situation. A case in point is a five-mile segment of Route 114 in nre York that passes through the villages of Sag harbor and North Haven on Eastern Long Island. Sag Harbor, with its whaling/port history and its architectural charm, and North haven, with its rural appeal, have each become more and more popular as both summer vacation sport and year-round residences. With this popularity comes increased traffic-cars, pedestrians, and bicyclists-and many accompanying issues. This paper examines the operational impacts of a traffic calming program developed to address these issues.
