New non-stick coatings for culinary utensils

2001
Fluoropolymers, especially PTFE, play a dominant role in non-stick coatings for domestic articles. PTFE has excellent properties for these applications like thermal and chemical resistance, but the coatings suffer from microporosity due to the fact that PTFE is a non melt processable polymer and forms a film only by a sintering process. This paper presents a new concept for reduction of microporosity of PTFE films involving the use of bimodal PTFE particles together with inorganic fillers with adjusted particle size distribution. This concept leads to a coating which can be described as a nanofilled composite. It results in better film integrity which renders better wear resistance and improved chemical protection to the coated substrate.
