Implementing smart manufacturing across an industrial organization

Abstract Terms like Digital Transformation, Smart Manufacturing, and Industry 4.0 are now commonplace and speak to the increased importance of digitalization in manufacturing. In the process industries it can be argued that the evolution of digital technologies has been taking place for at least 40 years, and while now a middle-aged trend, still has the potential to unlock billions of dollars of operating profit across the industry. This chapter summarizes the authors’ view of the factors to consider while on the digitalization journey as well as some of our recent successes related to the three pillars of Smart Manufacturing—data analytics, automation, and connectivity.
