Experimental research on laser-ultrasonic vibration synergic dressing of diamond wheel

Abstract Owing to their high performance in machining, metallic diamond wheels are widely employed for precise/ultra-precise grinding of difficult-to-machine materials. However, the performance of metallic diamond wheels depends on abrasive wear and exfoliation of the grinding diamond crystals. We developed and realized the laser-ultrasonic vibration synergic dressing (LUD) method for metallic diamond wheels. The laser-ultrasonic vibration synergic dressing instrument and the testing platform were built after simulations of material removal using thermo-mechanical coupling simulations by ABAQUS. Research and analysis of diamond abrasive grain morphology and dressing force under different finishing parameters.The dressing force obtained from simulation and experiments are compared. At the same time, The shape of the diamond abrasive grains in the LUD dressing mode is ocal crushing, micro-crushing, large-scale crushing, and also exfoliation of partially.
