Helping children succeed in school: a guide to special education services

Abstract The first portion of this chapter describes the concerns that children with disabilities have in terms of access to education and the problems that can arise if they do not receive the appropriate support from their schools. The second portion of the chapter discusses the details of each step of the special education process, including requesting a child to be evaluated for services and completing and implementing an Individualized Education Program. The final section of the chapter describes how to effectively work with schools to pursue accommodations, supports, or special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and methods to resolve disputes with a school district.
