Computationally efficient and fabrication error tolerant inverse-designed mode converters

We demonstrate inverse-designed mode converters with conversion efficiencies higher than 98.3% and insertion losses below 0.07 dB at the wavelength of $1.55 \mu \mathrm{m}$ . Despite their compact footprints, simulation results show tolerance to fabrication errors up to 10 nm under/over etch.
