Laser-protective soft contact lenses: Keeping an eye on the eye through plasmonics

Abstract The synthesis of a hydrogel-based soft contact lens featuring laser shielding capabilities is reported. These light-protective properties are accomplished through the integration of gold-based plasmonic nanoresonators into the lens polymer network, which provides the hydrogel with a high optical density while preserving visible light transmittance. The implementation of these hybrid materials shows great potential in the eye care setting in terms of applications. Along these lines, the ability of the Au nanocomposites to act as efficient light concentrators renders this approach a cost-effective alternative to other less absorbing formulations which may also be toxic or degradable upon light irradiation. Furthermore, the use of these hybrid lenses would provide the wearer with an all day long protection and a minimal obstruction to perform common tasks in those scenarios where high powered light sources are operated.
