A model of brittle-dominated wear due to delayed fracture (vertical crack growth)

1995
Abstract The purpose of this work is to develop the model of delayed fracture in brittle wear and in particular to show some effects of the activation energy, temperature, load, sliding velocity and size of contact on crack growth. The model of a pre-existing vertical crack loaded under severe wear in brittle materials with small and large grain sizes is considered taking into account the process zone ahead of crack. The dependence, characterizing influence of time and temperature on fracture is used. The expression for K I and K II are found and numerical procedure to calculate crack growth is elaborated. The influence of different parameters on crack length and stress intensity factors is discussed. The limitations of the model considered are analyzed. The prospects of further application of the considered model of delayed fracture under brittle wear are discussed.
