Review of Research on High-voltage Power Supplies Based on Pulse Step Modulation

To achieve controlled fusion, a variety of high voltage power supplies (HVPS) are vital for heating plasma to certain temperatures such as those in electron cyclotron resonance heating system (ECRH) and neutral beam injection (NBI) system. As a kind of HVPS widely used in fusion, presented article describes development, basic principles and current applications of pulse step modulation (PSM) based regulated high-voltage power supplies (RHVPS). A detailed study of important parameters and practical methods to improve its performance or address crucial issues of PSM based RHVPS are also shown in article. Various modulation discussed here, particularly, PSM shows great promising application in underwater acoustic transponder, high power motor driver etc. for its many advantages in inverter.
