Comparative suitability of groundwater of tongi for industrial usages

2003
An investigation was conducted to assess the suitability of groundwater for different industrial purposes at Tongi thana under Gazipur district. Water samples were collected from 20 deep tubewells for chemical analyses which included pH, EC, TDS, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cl, SO 4 and NO 3 . All groundwater were slightly acidic to alkaline (pH ≠ 6.99-8.00) in nature and were unsuitable for laundering industry. As regards to hardness (H T ), all water samples were unsuitable for confectionery, laundering, rayon manufacture and textile industries. Most of water samples were unsuitable for brewing, confectionery, paper and pulp industries with respect to TDS. Concentrations of Fe, SO;, and NO 3 were within the safe limits for all indusrial uses but Cl toxicity was detected for sugar and dairy industries. Only seven water samples were unsuitable for some industries like paper and pulp, brewing and dairy farm but all water samples were problematic for rayon manufacture industries as per Mn content. Considering all criteria, all groundwater were suitable for air conditioning. None of the water were found suitable for all industries under test.
