New buffer management schemes for P2P streaming systems

2013
With the rapid development of P2P technology, streaming media over P2P have occupied a very large share of the Internet traffic. However, P2P streaming systems still face many problems, especially in terms of buffer management. In this paper, we propose two new buffer management schemes for P2P steaming system, namely Interruption Frequency Based Scheme and Network Condition Based Scheme. The Interruption Frequency Based Scheme adjusts the initial buffer delay and rebuffer delay according to the interruption frequency of the playback stream. The Network Condition Based Scheme adjusts the initial buffer delay and rebuffer delay according to gaps between downloading rate and playback rate. Performance evaluation, which has been done on PlanetLab, shows that the two schemes fit different P2P network environments respectively, but both improve the performance of P2P streaming media systems in terms of Quality of Experience (QoE).
