Corrosion of Civil War Era Sub Marine Explorer—Part 1

Sub Marine Explorer, built near the end of the American Civil War and later abandoned in the Bay of Panama tidal zone, is one of the first submarines designed with ballast compensation. This article includes a sbort history of the craft, its present condition, literature review, and the methodology used to assess corrosion. Experimental results will be presented in Part 2 next month.
