Stress corrosion cracking and bioactivity of Ti-based bulk metallic glass

Abstract In this study, the stress corrosion cracking behavior and bioactivity of Ti–Zr–Cu–Pd–Sn bulk metallic glass (BMG) were investigated. The results revealed that the Ti-based BMG exhibited similar tensile behavior in Hanks’ solution with a slightly lower strength than that in air. A bioactive surface layer composed of calcium phosphate compound was obtained after a two-step treatment on the Ti-based BMGs. Hydrothermal–electrochemical treatment was effective to form a porous surface layer by increasing the Ti content and decreasing the Cu content in the surface. Consequently, pre-calcium treatment accelerated the nucleation of calcium phosphate particles. After hydrothermal–electrochemical and pre-calcium treatments, following by soaking in Hanks’ solution, homogeneous calcium phosphate layer formed on the Ti-based metallic glass.
