Different typesofroadtraffic parameters are required formodernroadtraffic control andmanagement operations. Imageprocessing basedsystems havebeenusedto forcollecting andanalysing roadtraffic data. However, these techniques havenotyielded goodresults duetovarious problems suchasinefficiency ofbackground updating andselecting a threshold value, change inambient lighting etc., whichresulted infalse detection ofvehicles. Inthispaperwedescribe novel morphological edgedetection and windowbasedimage processing technique forroadtraffic applications. Thisnovel method has been implemented on a Pentium-based microcomputer systemandtheresults arereported online in real-time. We alsohavecomparedoursystemwithother traditional imageprocessing basedsystems andtheresults indicate thatourproposed system provides better results than thetraditional imageprocessing basedsystems.
