The invention includes a method that displays the slice images by means of a display unit, wherein the slice images depict at least a partial volume of the object. Furthermore, a computing unit to program a first contour and a second contour in the slice images to be defined. The inventors have recognized that it is advantageous if the computing unit is further programmed to a first orientation of the first contour and the second contour relatively to each other automatically determined. For the first orientation comprises information about the spatial three-dimensional shape of the object. Now, the processing unit programmed to be based on the first orientation to select a segmentation algorithm automatically. Determining the first orientation thus allows to select a segmentation algorithm which is particularly suitable for the segmentation of an object having a certain shape. Segmentation is therefore particularly efficient and reliable.
