Towards a marine strategy for the bureau of Meteorology

2013
The Bureau of Meteorology's vision is to provide environmental intelligence for the safety, sustainability, wellbeing and prosperity of Australians. The breadth of the Bureau's activity in environmental intelligence has increased markedly over the last decade and is expected to continue over the next decade. The Bureau undertakes a range of activities within the marine zone, across it's core functions of forecasts, warnings, information, observations and the underpinning research required to deliver the high level of service expected by users. Many other organizations are also heavily involved in marine activities and either rely on or contribute to the information, products and services provided by the Bureau. In response to an increase in demand for these marine services the Bureau has begun feasibility assessments under the guidance of a developing Marine Observations, Research and Information Systems Strategy. An initial draft document has been socialized with a range of key stakeholders and further work is underway on developing phased implementation plans. This paper provides an overview of the consultation process and ongoing actions to develop and implement the Bureau of Meteorology's Marine Observations, Research and Information Systems Strategy.
