Citizen Capabilities for Making Meaningful Cities

2022
Meaningfulness at the city level fosters economic and social advancement from an alliance of social and material meaning-sources with human capabilities, framed by public values. Stakeholder/citizen participation is central to promoting city-level meaningfulness. But exactly how do stakeholders incorporate values and meanings with positive impacts upon the meaningfulness of their lives? How does this relate to city sustainability? This chapter explores how stakeholder capabilities, including moral thinking and decision-making against principles/ values, can be fostered. These concepts will be explored through the King’s Cross Development/ London case study which is one of the largest redevelopments in London. A conceptual model will be developed and discussed with reference to the results from stakeholder interviews.
