Development of health surveillance in Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon

Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is a 6,008 inhabitants French territory located in North-America The territorial health administration exercises the powers devolved to the regional health agencies According to the main health entities of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, the collect of data on health is one of the most important issue to acquire knowledge and to implement adapted responses This article aims to describe the surveillance systems carried out in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and their first results The general physicians and the emergency doctors have been associated to the creation of a sentinel physician's network, specifically monitoring six health indicators Concomitantly the emergency department of the hospital has been integrated to the OSCOUR network Data about mortality are also implemented in this tool of surveillance Between September 2018 and February 2019, two outbreaks of influenza syndromes and chicken pox were detected and described thanks to these devices Traumatology was seen as the main cause of emergency recourse The 15-54 year old represent half of the recourses whereas patients under 15 represent 23% of the recourses and patients over 75 represent 10% These trends are also found in metropolitan France The rates of emergency care use in 2017 and 2018 is higher than in mainland France (680 emergency presentations for 1,000 inhabitants) Between 2011 and 2019 rates of mortality are comprised between 5 9 deaths for 1,000 inhabitants in 2012 and 9 7 for 1 000 in 2017 To complete this system and to better understand health behaviors, the construction of indicators via the Sante publique France's Health Barometer, initially planned for April 2020, has been postponed for a few weeks due to the COVID-19 outbreak
