Metallogeny of Pennine Orefields

The North and South Pennine orefields have a long history of research, and the literature on their geology, mineralogy, mining history, ore parageneses and genesis is extensive. Comprehensive data for the North Pennine orefields were given by Dunham (1948) and Dunham and Wilson (1985) for the Alston and Askrigg areas, respectively. No comparable compilation is available for the South Pennine Orefield, but numerous theses—for example, Butcher (1976), Worley (1978), Atkinson (1983) and Mostaghel (1984)—and many other papers, some of which are referred to below, describe most of the parameters that have a bearing on the formation of the mineral deposits. Ineson and Ford (1982) summarised the previous work on the South Pennine Orefield and discussed possible genetic models, and Dunham (1983) provided a comprehensive overview of the three Pennine orefields, which he characterised as a ‘fluoritic subtype’ of the Mississippi Valley genus of Pb/Zn ore deposits.
