Wind turbine blade leading-edge erosion: laboratory experiments and image processing under an engaged learning experience

2020
This paper reports results from an engaged learning activity conducted within an integrated, multi-scale, multi-disciplinary project focused on wind turbine blade leading edge erosion. Actions and outcomes of a series of engaged learning activities by undergraduate and graduate students undertaken in spring 2019 are reported. In designing and conducting the numerical and laboratory experiments, the students learnt and applied a range of practical skills from 3D printing to working in the wind tunnel, creating controlled images and image processing techniques. The student team also engaged in substantial professional development and educational outreach activities.
