Driver's Comprehension of Distracted Driving Slogans: An Investigation

2016
Driver distraction is a specific type of driver inattention whereas drivers divert their attention from the driving task to other activity. Studies show that talking on a cell phone quadruples the risk of an accident, and the risks doubles, to eight times normal, if the driver is found texting. In the wake of this epidemic, public and private agencies use slogans to convey the dangers and laws pertaining to distracted driving. However, the question of whether drivers of all ages understand the slogans remains unanswered. This study surveyed 347 individuals during June 2015 and July 2015, using five slogans in a college town and the results show that, younger drivers have more comprehension level compared to older drivers. Further, the results show that drivers with university education display higher comprehension of traffic signs compared to their counterparts.
