THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF A NON-RELEASING SILVER CONTAINING WOUND DRESSING ON FIBROBLAST PROLIFERATION

Silver has been shown to be beneficial as an antimicrobial and this has been supported clinically with SIAC. The results obtained in this study however demonstrate that the combination of activated charcoal with silver is more beneficial than charcoal alone and other silver-releasing dressings. SIAC has been shown to not only reduce bacterial contamination in wounds but also to have no negative effect on fibroblast proliferation which is essential for wound repair, an effect which was not observed with silver releasing dressings.
