Summary of Session 1

The eight papers presented Monday covered topics including internal waves, acoustically-relevant descriptions of internal waves, the acoustic effects of internal waves and other processes, ocean acoustic experiments, and the use of acoustics to infer, or directly observe ocean processes (e.g. acoustic scintillation and tomography inverses). Appropriate partitions between deterministic processes (e.g. tides and fronts) and stochastic processes was an important theme. This theme and many others continued through the week, hence, it is not useful to summarize the discussions held only on Monday.
