Registration of ‘HoCP 11-537’ Sugarcane

2019
‘HoCP 11-537’ (Reg. No. CV-186, PI 688683) sugarcane (an interspecific hybrid of S. officinarum, S. barberi Jeswiet, S. spontaneum, and S. sinense Roxb. amend. Jeswiet) was selected and evaluated by scientists at the USDA-ARS, working cooperatively with the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, and the American Sugarcane League of the USA, Inc., and Rio Farms Inc. It was released in March 2018, primarily for the Texas industry to increase genetic diversity. In field evaluations, HoCP 11-537 had yields comparable to ‘CP 89-2143’ and ‘CP 72-1210’, the most widely grown Texas commercial cultivars. Sugar yield (Mg/ha⁻¹), sucrose content (kg sucrose Mg⁻¹ cane), and cane yield (Mg ha⁻¹) of HoCP 11-537 from plant-cane, first-ratoon, and second-ratoon crop evaluations at five locations did not differ from those of CP 89-2143 or CP 72-1210. HoCP 11-537 is moderately susceptible to smut and leaf scald and is susceptible to brown rust and ratoon stunt. Sugarcane mosaic (caused by Sorghum mosaic virus) and orange rust have not been observed on HoCP 11-537.
