Classification of expansive soils in arid regions Thermogravimetric investigation of smectite content

The clay type and clay fraction of arid soils can have a considerable influence on their physical behaviour. Thermogravimetric analysis is proposed as a technique of considerable potential in identifying both the clay minerals and their quantities. The technique is described and methods of interpretation are briefly discussed by reference to an example of the analysis applied to an Australian clay.
