Preliminary Multipole Calculations of the SSC Vertical Bending Magnets

1994
The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the magnetics calculations performed on the vertical bending magnets of the Superconducting Super Collider ring. These magnets are among the special dipole magnets needed in the interaction regions of the collider ring. Each magnet consists of two Collider Dipole Magnet (CDM) cold masses rotated by 90 degrees and placed in a single cryostat. The distance between the beam tube centerlines varies between 0.45 and 0.606 m. The cold mass used for the calculations is the General Dynamics version B coil cross-section. The main concern is whether the CDM cold masses are able to shield the field sufficiently to prevent significant “cross-talk” between the cold masses as well as magnetization of the asymmetrically placed cryostat. The calculations were performed with a 180 degree finite element model of the magnet cross-section. The calculation approach and the results will be discussed in this paper.
