Combining ability for plant height and yield related traits in wheat, Triticum aestivum L.

2006
A study was conduced in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during 1999-2001. In this study combining ability of 4 x 4 diallel cross combinations was evaluated for traits like plant height, spike length, number of spikelets per spike and number of grains per spike by using Griffing’s technique (1956 method-1, model-1). Mean squares of GCA and SCA were significant for all the traits studied. GCA effects of all characters of variety Pasban-90 were highly significant while rest entries had negative values. SCA effects for cross 6039-1 x 6529-11 was highly significant for number of grains per spike while among reciprocal crosses, SCA for cross 6529-11 x TW-161 was highly significant for plant height (3.15), spike length (0.48) and number of grains per spike (3.3). It was concluded that variety Pasban-90 was the best general combiner for number of grains per spike and crosses 6039-1 x 6529-11 and TW-161 x 6039-1 were the best specific combiner for spike length and number of spikelets per spike.
