This paper presents efforts taken in the US and Europe to aid home builders quantify the performance of buildings designed to consume 90% less than typical construction. To increase demand for energy efficient construction, information pertaining to upfront and lifecycle costs needs to be easily accessed. Relaying the building science behind low energy buildings is important, however delivering that information needs to be in a manner non-building professionals can quantify. This will require expressing energy efficiency in terms of euros, pounds, and dollars of monthly expenditure, as opposed to kilowatthours per square ft, per year.
