Sport and Covid: a question of management and contracts

2020
The year 2020 will always be remembered for the COVID-19 pandemic. This brought on unprecendented governance issues for Australian sport, such as re-scheduling seasons and creating bio-security bubbles. The reduced season also meant contracts for broadcasting rights had to be renegotiated, both the AFL and NRL agreeing to reduced broadcasting revenue. Cricket was the only sport to have problems, refusing to accept lower payments from Seven and Foxtel which were adament they should not have to pay the contracted amounts due to a lesser product being delivered. The loss of revenue has meant extensise cost cutting measures that have resulted in redundancies and salary cuts. What the pandemic has hihglihted is thta professional team sport relies heavily on contracts.
