EnglishJose Echegaray, an outstanding figure in the history of Spain, triumphed in the main professions of his life: the cultivation of mathematical science and his dedication to the theatre as a playwright. While he was always acknowledged as an accomplished mathematician, his role as a playwright was more controversial, in spite of receiving the Nobel Prize for literature in 1904. Echegaray took on the difficult and precarious transformation from mathematician to dramatist by attempting to elaborate a scientific and paradigmatic aesthetic ethos. He felt obliged to qualify and explain his method of theatrical production which would produce spectacular effects on the spectator.
