Code generator to integrate telecontrol protocols

1998
The problem of designing efficient and unambiguous communication protocols existed long before the first computers were built. From the protocol designers' point of view, there have existed many mishaps due to the fact that their solution to a particular communication problem was not well interpreted. Because of this, international organizations have promoted the application of formal description techniques (FDTs). The CUP (universal protocol converter) system is based around the use of FDTs for the definition of both communication protocols and protocol converters. This tool generates the executable code from a protocol specification in Estelle for either the MS-DOS or the UNIX operating system. In this paper, all the steps to design a communication protocol using CUP are pointed out to make easy the designer's task. Furthermore it is shown how this system is helpful to integrate protocols in a telecommunication management system at Power Utilities for management purposes.
