For the past 200 years, ceramics have domained the field of dentistry. Their desirable features include their biocompatibility and appearance. They can be customized to simulate the color, translucency and fluorescence of natural tooth. Various all ceramic systems have been discussed. Stronger materials are preferred in stress bearing situations and the softer materials should be used where tooth abrasion is critical. The esthetic results of these crowns can be brought to the fullest in the hands of a trained and a skilled dentist. Newer ceramic materials and innovative ceramic processing techniques have been introduced since the 1980s. Notable recent progress includes the advent of predictable all ceramic materials and techniques for esthetic complete crowns, partial coverage and laminate veneers. Introduction of CAD/CAM and machining as a route to fabrication of restorations have improved the understanding of the clinical response of all ceramic prosthesis. All ceramics are the new demand of esthetic dentistry. Their development is expected to continue & be influential in determining the range of materials available. They are the never ending bright future.
