TRUCK TRAFFIC BETWEEN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES

1997
Recent work related to NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) negotiations for Transport Canada described the weight and dimension regulations of the provinces and territories and the neighboring states in detail. New information on truck flows and new surveys have become available and that allows this paper to relate cross-border truck traffic to the governing sets of regulations. NAFTA established a process to work on common weight and dimension limits, but there has been little progress to date, perhaps because of the complexity and diversity of the regulations. This paper outlines existing regulations and describes how cross-border trucking has accommodated itself to the diversity of weight and dimension regulations.
