Water Treatment Facility Design for a Glacial Lake

1986
The Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska has undertaken a major water supply project, the Eklutna Water Project, to satisfy the growing water demands of Anchorage. The source of raw water, Eklutna Lake, is a glacially-fed body of water which contains large amounts of glacial flour. This paper discusses the results of the year-long pilot plant study that was conducted to determine the treatability of Eklutna Lake water. In addition, this paper discusses the treatment process design criteria established for the Eklutna Lake water source. Finally, a discussion of the proposed sludge handling method for the Eklutna Water Treatment Facility, sludge freeze/thaw, is provided.
