Low-Cost Salinity Treatment for Drinking Purpose Using Indigenous Materials

2022
There are various desalination techniques available around the world which remove salinity in an excellent way but are costly. This study demonstrates a low-cost salinity removal technique using indigenous material such as laterite soil and rice husk. Twelve filter media were prepared with three variable thicknesses and four combinations of Laterite Soil and Rice Husk Ash. The best salinity removal efficiency was found 42.86% while the average was 26.61%. It was obtained from the filter media having a thickness of one inch and the combination of hundred percent laterite soil (LS100-RHA0) for initial concentration of 900 mg/l. The flow rate was 5.23 L/Day.
