Development of accurate and effective software for 4πβ — γ coincidence counting

2021
Software coincidence counting (SCC) is a prospective and efficient technology in the field of absolute activity measurement. Pervious studies built the hardware and a preliminary software of the measurement system based on the 4πβ—γ method. This software is advanced in the following aspects: 1) the software compatibility has been improved, such that the software can process data from different measurement systems, such as the liquid scintillation counting (LS) and proportional counter (PC) systems; 2) the computing performance of the DCC software can boost much by designing a parallel computing algorithm with a compute unified device architecture structure based on the graphical processing unit (GPU); 3) the extendable dead time mode logic is realized in the software, such that the surveyors can apply the "Smith formulae" and the "Muller formulae" to the same data set for mutual corroboration. Comparison of the results between the software and previously validated method at the National Institute of Metrology (NIM) indicates that this software can successfully calculate the activity of β - γ decay radionuclides and has a good utilization prospect.
