Satellite navigation in an undergraduate laboratory

We describe an undergraduate experiment to explore satellite global positioning with the TRANSIT system, making use of the Doppler effect. Using a commercial SATNAV receiver, our students make contact themselves with navigation satellites and observe the process of position fixing.
