NETWORK EQUILIBRIUM MODELS OF URBAN LOCATION AND TRAVEL CHOICES: A RETROSPECTIVE SURVEY. IN: THE AUTOMOBILE

The objective of this paper is to present a retrospective survey of the development of one important version of the problem in which the cost on each link is an increasing function of that link's flow. The review emphasizes formulations of the network equilibrium model in which location and mode choices or travel demand, as well as route choices, are variables, in contrast with the case of fixed demand. The network equilibrium model with variable travel demand is closely related to another model known in urban transportation planning as the combined model of trip distribution and traffic assignment. The account presented here is limited to formal statements of the models associated with the perspectives and the derivation of the conditions governing location, travel, and network equilibria.
