Research needs workshop: hazardous wastes treatment and disposal

1986
The specific objectives of the workshop were: (1) to identify nationally recognized experts conducting research on hazardous waste treatment and disposal; (2) to summarize the present status of the information available in the various areas of hazardous-waste research; (3) to identify the current needs for basic research which can contribute to long-term solutions for the wide variety of hazardous-waste problems; (4) to bring together this group of experts to generate a reasonably well-focused and uniform position on the subject; (5) to recommend areas of research requiring NSF funding; and (6) to disseminate the information generated to the technical community. Eight areas of research were selected for study by the panels of the workshop; (1) source identification and benefication; (2) hazard identification and evaluation; (3) incineration; (4) physical treatment processes; (5) chemical and biological treatment processes; (6) land disposal; (7) monitoring, restoring, and protecting groundwater quality; and (8) risk assessment. Position papers, conclusions, recommendations, the workshop format, and a list of participants are included.
