Forced family migration and somatisation work during long periods of waiting: a clinical study

2021
Forced family migration is a journey punctuated by periods of waiting that vary in length. During this waiting time, the body sometimes engages in a process of somatisation, allowing the migrant to move from survival mode to the gradual regaining of control of his or her subjectivity. The case of a young woman forced, in a context of political violence, to migrate from North Africa to France and who showed somatic symptoms is investigated. The discussion focuses on the way the body comes to signify this demand for psychological work and how the first raw affects help understand the setting in motion of the pre-processes of mental suffering and trauma.
