Relationship between HCMV infections detected by fluorescence quantitative PCR and male infertility.

2010
Objective To use fluorescence quantitative PCR to detect human cytomegalovirus(HCMV) in male infertility patients and examine the relationship between human cytomegalovirus infection and male infertility. Methods Fluorescence quantitative PCR detected 85 male infertility patients with HCMV infection.Sperm morphology and sperm vitality analysis were performed using a semiautomatic sperm morphology analyzer. Results Of 85 semen samples from patients,3.8%(3/85) were positive for HCMV,and this rate differed from that in virus-negative patients(0/16,P0.05).Differences between the virus-positive patients and virus-negative patients in terms of the sperm concentration, semen pH,semen volume, liquefying time, and the percentage of sperm with normal morphology were not statistically significant(P0.05).The percentage of sperm with an abnormal head was markedly higher in virus-positive patients than in virus-negative patients(P0.05).Conclusion Infection with HCMV may lead to malformation of the head of sperm. Thus,HCMV infection may be closely correlated with male infertility.
