Validation and Use of EDR Data from a Non-CDR Supported Vehicle in a Criminal Prosecution Case

2013
This paper reports how an Event Data Recorder (EDR) aided in the prosecution of an intoxicated teenager driver in a fatal traffic accident in California in December of 2010. The teen was traveling at a high rate of speed and ran a redlight, which resulted in the fatal collision. The data that was collected from the EDRs of both vehicles involved in the crash were presented as evidence in the criminal trial of the teen. The validation testing of the results were ruled as admissible and were offered as supporting evidence for the state and the teen was convicted of two counts of murder in the case.
